Contractor appointed to replace botched insulation
A CONTRACTOR has been appointed to carry out remedial works to homes at the centre of the Caerau insulation scandal.
More than 100 houses in the village, near Maesteg, were affected as a result of a scheme whereby Bridgend County Borough Council paid more than £300,000 to insulate homes under a grant known as Arbed.
As part of the scheme, and another similar one named the Community Energy Savings Programme, homes were subject to shoddy installations that caused major issues with damp, mould and structural damage, costing many residents up to £20,000 in repairs.
More than 10 years after the work was carried out in 2012-13, Bridgend County Borough Council has now appointed Warmworks as the main contractor for the remedial works following a “thorough procurement process”.
The council says the contractor will be responsible for removing any inadequate insulation and replacing it with new insulation that meets the latest quality standards.
Warmworks will partner with SERS Energy Solutions Group, which the council describes as a UK market leader in the installation, repair, and maintenance of external wall insulation.
Warmworks has worked with SERS since 2015 on a variety of different schemes.
A series of events will be hosted by Warmworks where registered households will be able to meet team members and see the types of insulation that will be installed.
Mark Shephard, chief executive of Bridgend County Borough Council, said: “The appointment of a contractor represents a significant milestone in this project and residents can be reassured by the detailed procurement process that has led to this appointment.
“Warmworks have delivered 150,000 energy-efficiency measures in more than 40,000 households across the UK, consistently delivering the highest levels of quality and customer care.
“The works are nationally accredited and are in line with all the latest regulations.
“Residents will soon be contacted directly about opportunities to meet the contractor and more information about the start date of the works will also be provided following discussions between the project team and contractor.”
Ross Armstrong, chief executive of Warmworks, added: “Warmworks is pleased to have been appointed as the contractor for the Caerau wall insulation project, building on the success of our existing resident liaison service.
“We’re looking forward to working closely with local residents and families to make a lasting difference in the local community.”
