Parry leaves it late as champions snatch victory in a thriller
A last-gasp try from replacement Josh Parry snatched a 50-47 victory for champions Bargoed at Rumney in a 15-try end-of-season thriller in Admiral Championship East.
The league and cup double-winning Bulls had moments earlier looked to be heading for only their third defeat of the season when backrower Rhodri Morgan’s try, converted by Liam Free, nudged Rumney back in front 47-43 in the dying moments of a see-saw encounter.
The visitors edged the contest eight tries to seven.
Morgan Thomas, Jordan Howells, Keegan Bale, Dai Evans, Ashley Norton and Kieron Brown (2) were also on the scoresheet for Bargoed. Josh Prosser – on his 200th Bargoed appearance – kicked five conversions.
Harvey Jones, Harry Ryan, Lewis Hill, Lewis Ames (2) and Hugo Souto were the other Rumney try scorers. Free landed six conversions.
A 20th win from 22 games sees Bargoed end the season on 99 points, some 18 points clear of nearest challengers Cardiff Met at the top of the table.
Rumney, meanwhile, finish eighth having won nine and lost 13.
The only other outstanding Championship fixture was at the Bridgefield where Bedwas came from 17-7 behind to wrap up their campaign with a 31-22 bonus-point home win over Treorchy.
The Wass had to dig deep to see off a youthful, hard-working Zebras outfit who belied their position at the bottom of the table.
First-half unconverted tries from Callum Elward and Nathan Griffiths put Treorchy 10-7 up at the break. Tommy Chapman scored for Bedwas, converted by James Dixon.
The visitors then opened up a 10-point lead in the second half when Mason Brabon went over for a try converted by Griffiths.
But back came Bedwas with tries from Rhys Morgans, converted by Dixon, and Adam Williams to hit the front 19-17. Further tries from Dale Rogers, converted by Dixon, and Hamish Anderson wrapped up victory.
Evan Williams ran in a fourth try for Treorchy to secure a bonus point.
Bedwas finish the season seventh, while it has been a difficult campaign for Treorchy who picked up just one league win at home against Rumney at the end of last month.
