Orr is happy to play it by the book
GlasGow ace David orr spends a great deal of time with the golf coaching manual these days.
However, he produced a text book display of his own to boost his aberdeen asset Management Northern open hopes.
The former scottish PGa champion fired a four-underpar 66 at a windy Meldrum House for a six-under 204.
He was sitting in a share of second place heading into today’s final round.
orr has a growing client base at the Mearns Castle facility on the city’s southside, and his coaching duties are now the 38-year-old’s main focus.
But the former scottish assistants’ champ remains a classy competitor on the Tartan Tour.
He kept himself at the sharp end with a tidy card yesterday that included a chip-in for birdie from off the ninth green.
orr, who trails runaway leader James Byrne by six shots, said: “This was as hard as I’ve seen this course play because of the wind.
“If someone had offered me an under-par score I would have bitten their hand off.
“Tournament golf is not my main priority these days, but I can switch back into it when I need to.
“Coaching gives me a different kind of kick, but it’s nice to get back into the sharp end of a tournament. That always gets the juices flowing.”
Byrne carded a 66 to open a commanding lead on 198, while Buchanan Castle pro Jason McCreadie finished alongside orr in a share of second with a 68.
The local duo were joined on that mark by defending champ David law, who shot a 63.
Paul McKechnie shares sixth spot on 207 after a 70, while Cawder’s Chris Kelly had a 69 for 209. Kirkhill’s Paul shields is still in the hunt for the leading amateur prize after a 70 left him on 210.
