Saints passing game clicks into place at last
DANNYLENNON has ordered his St Mirren side to use their 5-1 Scottish Communities League Cup mauling of Ayr as the springboard to an SPL charge.
The Buddies produced some devastating, slick passing football to thrash the Honest Men, who just over 10 months before had sent Saints tumbling out of the same competition at the last-eight stage.
Now Lennon’s men will head to Aberdeen tomor- row determined to claim a win that would take them back into the top half of the table.
Lennon is upbeat about the prospects of his side continuing a run that has had them score 11 goals in their first five outings of the new campaign.
The St Mirren manager said: “I felt that we produced a performance against Ayr that was everything I am looking for from the team.
“Our passing was slick and concise and the tempo we played the game at was nice and high.
“But that is the level of performance I am looking for us to produce week-in week-out. The acid test of our ability to do that is how we show up at Pittodrie against an Aberdeen side who have also started the season well.
“But it is very pleasing to have scored 11 goals in five games and I think that is testament to the options we now have up top and the quality of football we have been playing to get the ball into the strikers.
“It has taken a wee bit of time for our passing game to click but the performance against Ayr was proof that we are now there and it is up to us to use that to kick-on.”
Indeed, the main dilemma facing Lennon ahead of tomorrow’s tussle with the Dons is which strike force to field.
Lewis Guy was played in tandem with Stevie Thompson and the duo combined well with the latter winning his share in the air and Guy feeding off these flicks.
“With Thompson also on the score-sheet it seems certain that the duo will start in harness in the North East.
Lennon admitted his delight at his strikers’ form.
The Buddies boss said: “Lewis looked very sharp and combined well with Big Thommo and with big Sam Parkin and Dougie Imrie also available to us we have depth and options we did not have last season.
“We are star ting to show the type of form in the final third that will hurt any side.”
