- By NICK RODGER

DaviD Orr finished in a share of second spot in the aberdeen asset Management Northern Open at Meldrum House last night.

However, there was silverware for Balmore youngster Fraser McKenna, who bagged the Bookless Cup as top amateur.

Orr, from Glasgow, carded a closing 69 for a seven-under 273, leaving him five shots behind Banchory rookie James Byrne, who claimed his first win as a pro.

Orr said: “i played better than the score suggests and a couple of three-putts stopped my momentum.

“i was six shots behind with a round to play and that was always going to be a big task.”

McKenna brought the curtain down on the campaign with a 12th place finish in a field of seasoned Tartan Tour pros.

The 21-year-old, part of the Scotland team that won the recent Home internationals, returned a 69 for a 280 aggregate to pip Scott Crichton and adam Dunton to the amateur prize by a single shot.

McKenna is planning to step up to the professional game at the end of next year.

and the Glasgow golfer said: “This event has shown me some of the areas of my game that i need to improve.

“This has been a good week for me and the competition on the Tartan Tour is really strong.

“The putting is the big difference and i have to get to that standard.”

Milton of Campsie’s Paul McKechnie took seventh place on 276 after a 69, while Buchanan Castle’s double Northern Open champion Jason McCreadie, sharing second overnight, slumped to a 75 for 279 and dropped back to 10th place.
