Cyclists’ global bike challenge

Riders try to equal Beaumont’s round the world mileage

FOUR big-hearted Glasgow cyclists will be putting themselves through their paces after becoming the first to volunteer for a 24-hour charity challenge.

Garry McCann, John Hendry, Nathan McCann and Chris Fraser have signed up f o r t h e C ycl e t h e Wo rl d Challenge, to raise money for learning disability charity Enable Scotland.

The event, at Fife’s Knockhill Racing Circuit on Friday, October 5 and Saturday 6, was launched by recordbrea­king, around the world cyclist, Mark Beaumont.

The challenge will see riders race day and night around the 1.3 mile circuit in a bid to equal the 18,296 miles covered by Mark on his world record venture.

The winning team will be invited to cycle in Glasgow’s Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome when it opens this autumn.

nauld and work colleague John, 36, from the South Side, decided to sign up after their company, Cole Advertisin­g, designed the event’s website.

They invited Garry’s son, Nathan, 21, from the West End, and John’s friend Chris, 35, from the South Side, to join them.

Garry, the creative director at the agency, said: “We are all pretty fit and regular cyclists – however we have stepped up our training for the event.

“Enable Scotland help the Lend a Hand project, in Fife, which supports a little girl called Mirren.

“I met Mirren’s mum and dad last year and was deeply moved by them and their stor y, a dignified family making the most of a difficult situation. I’m sure that the thought of them will drive us on to do our best.”

To register a team, visit www.enable.org.uk, where you can keep track of your training prog ramme and fundraisin­g total in the ‘cycle zone’.

Registrati­on costs £30 per person with a minimum sponsorshi­p of £375.
