Mad goings-on are the talk of the town

- By SUSAN SWARBRICK

every Monday between 10pm and 10.30pm my Facebook and twitter feeds become a happier place.

Be it chatter about demented ice cream van owners, taxidermy gone wrong, plank sniffing, kooky customised Satnav voices or “lassie’s chocolate”, it’s a welcome break from the usual gripes about the weather, doing the ironing and being skint.

For that, robert Florence and iain Connell, creators of Burnistoun, i thank you.

the comedic shenanigans of the fictitious Scottish town continue as a priest reveals he has a direct line to God but perhaps isn’t using it for most divine purposes. although who is to fault a bit of daft banter with the almighty?

an interactive mobile phone app gets tested with unexpected – but hilarious – consequences for its inventor.

elsewhere, the instructional DvD How to Punch a Guy makes its world premiere and tensions run high as two friends fall out over which one of them can do the best gasp of shock while watching a horror film.

two brothers run into trouble while clearing out their family’s loft, a date takes a disastrous turn when pizza is served, while Burnistoun’s self-styled “favourite son”, Biscuity Boyle, makes an ill-fated visit to the set of an animated tv series where havoc ensues among its cast of clay puppets.

Be it twee Scottishness, religious guilt, those with ideas above their station, absurd tradition and dialect-related linguistic gymnastics, no subject is too big or too small for the purposes of Burnistoun’s lampooning pleasure.

For those who haven’t caught this series yet – how was Mars? – permission granted to pull a sickie from work and hole up at home with the boxsets from the first two series.

as for the rest of you? i’ll see you in twitter utopia tonight.
