Ton need backs to stop City goal rush

- By CHRIS JACK

JIM DUFFY admits his Morton defenders will need to be at their best to shut out Brechin City’s sharp-shooters.

The Greenock outfit head to Glebe Park on the back of a 2-1 defeat at Stenhousemuir last weekend. They are looking to get back to winning ways against Ray McKinnon’s side, who are now fifth in the League One standings.

But Duffy is expecting a tough test for his backs against a City side that has netted 12 times in seven league games.

He said: “Brechin are a team that score goals. They are really positive.

“They score a few and lose a few but you know they will have a go.

“I know how tough it will be up at Brechin. We will have to defend well.

“We will have to be at our best but, if we are solid defensively, I am sure we will create some opportunities.

“And hopefully we can take those chances to get all three points.”

Victory in Brechin would guarantee Ton a place in the third tier’s play-off zone. It could even take them top if promotion rivals Forfar, Dunfermline and Ayr United slip up.

Duffy said: “Everyone is in the mix at the start of the season but, as the months go by, injuries can play a part and the form levels out a bit.

“At this stage, every team is looking to get points on the board as quickly as they can.

“Each game is fiercely contested and I don’t see that changing for a while yet. We still haven’t completed the first quarter so it’s too early to judge who the league front-runners will be.”
