Win can leave us Well placed to go on a run

-

THE only word to describe our form this season is frustrating, and that applied again to our most recent display.

Things are easier when you are winning and playing well, so last Saturday’s defeat to Kilmarnock was a really hard one to take because we just didn’t perform.

We’ve won two of our first seven league games – against Ross County and Inverness – but we haven’t built on those victories and put a run together.

That, however, is what we need to do now, starting with today’s clash with Motherwell at Firhill.

I watched the Killie game back with Alan Archibald and, while we had a lot of the ball in the first half, the goals we lost were so avoidable and the second half was poor.

It was a bad result but we have to move on. The good thing about football is you always have another game to put things right and the players have a chance do to that this afternoon.

We go through everything with them, working on defending and attacking, and hopefully they will get the rewards their efforts deserve sooner rather than later.

Once the players cross the white line it is down to them to take responsibility for their decisions and performances.

We want to bounce back, so the players will need to stand up, express themselves and get on the ball.

We need to find consistency. If we can get back-to-back wins over the next few weeks that would be great. We could really kick on.

There is not a lot between the teams in the Premiership, so if you can go on a run it really pays off in terms of the table.

Look at Hamilton. They lost their first game but have gone on a great run since then and are second in the league now.

I am confident that our boys have that kind of form in them. It only takes a couple of wins to get you up the table.

It’s always good to get a win before going into an international break. If you don’t, the disappointment can linger. So we want to go into our free weekend on the back of a good performance and a victory today against Motherwell.

Stuart McCall and his players will be thinking the same though. They’ve not had a great start to the season by their standards but will be determined to beat us.

This is not the start they would have been looking for but they are still a good team.

They have a lot of good, experienced players who can drag them out of a poor spell like this. And we know they will be well organised.

But our boys are still confident. It has not been hard to keep their heads up or their spirits up.

You don’t become a bad player or a bad team overnight. We know the quality we have in the team and in our squad.

It is frustrating when you don’t get the results you want because we know we can do better.

Those results will come, though. I know we will do better.
