City must be kept moving

-

THE work on the Glasgow to Edinburgh railway line is a significant investment and is designed to improve services between the country’s two main cities.

In order to carry it out there will be disruption and the closure of the Winchburgh Tunnel will cause major upheaval.

Glasgow relies on people getting in and out of the city quickly, especially at peak times in the morning and evening.

That will not change because there is a major rail engineering programme taking place.

The contingency plans that are being put in place need to be robust enough to cope with the numbers of people involved.

Glasgow can’t close down until the work is complete, and there needs to be sufficient capacity on the alternative routes to cope.

There are other works taking place over weekends during this period, which will put added pressure on the city centre.

For visitors, workers, shoppers and everyone who comes into Glasgow by train, there will be inconvenience and people will need to exercise a degree of patience.

This work needs to be carried out as quickly as is safely possible and the city’s transport network back running smoothly once again.

Rail bosses, political and business leaders need to make sure the plans to keep Glasgow moving throughout this disruption are fit for purpose.
