A SCOT has died after plunging from a hotel balcony in the Spanish party resort of Ibiza.

The 26-year-old man is understood to have been found around 11.30pm on Saturday.

He was named as Robert Gillespie, from Larbert, Stirlingshire.

Mr Gillespie – who was known as Fraser – was believed to have been staying at a fifth-floor room in the two-star Piscis Park Hotel, in San Antonio.

An investigation is under way to determine the cause of death.

Authorities said Mr Gillespie was pronounced dead at the scene. His body is thought to have been discovered in the hotel’s car park late on Saturday night.

Police and paramedics rushed to the scene, but could not revive him.

Tributes were paid to Mr Gillespie on social media.

A Foreign Office spokesman confirmed officials in the UK had been made aware of the incident in Ibiza. He added: “We are providing consular assistance to the family at this sad and difficult time.”

The tragedy follows two other incidents involving British holidaymakers in Spain this year.

A British man also died in San Antonio on May 2, after plunging from a 13th floor balcony.

Two weeks later, another Briton died after falling down stairs inside a bar in Magaluf, Majorca.

Ian Frankland, 36, from Doncaster, South Yorkshire, fell 20ft down a flight of stairs inside a pub on the Punta Ballena strip.

And in 2014, a British tourist posted a video on social media of a friend risking his life by jumping from the roof of the Piscis Park Hotel into its swimming pool. He is thought to have taken part as part of a dare.

Tour ists have dubbed the practice as “balconing”, which local authorities and police are trying to tackle with fines.

Just weeks earlier, a Scottish woman died after falling from a hotel balcony while on holiday in Benidorm.

The 25-year-old, from Edinburgh, was on a trip with two friends at the time.

She is understood to have fallen from the fifth-floor balcony of the Hotel Gala Placidia in August.

She is thought to have been returning from a night out when the tragedy happened.
