Erwin unfazed by bout with Bilel
IT WAS an afternoon to remember for Lee Erwin as the Motherwell striker helped the Fir Park club stay in the Premiership.
On Thursday, the 21-year-old played an integral part in the Steelmen claiming an historic 3-1 win at Ibrox after his opener set the tone for the game.
Yesterday, he was in the thick of it both before and after the final whistle in a dramatic play-off final second leg.
Deployed in attack by Ian Baraclough, the former Scotland Under-19 cap led the line fantastically well and was unlucky not to score in the first half.
In the dying moments in the second, his jinking run earned Motherwell a penalty to make it 3-0 before he was involved in an altercation with Rangers’ Bilel Mohsni after the game where he was struck on the face.
However, it failed to wipe away his smile.
Erwin said: “I grew up supporting Rangers as a young boy...but Rangers can wait their turn.
“We battered them. We were a class above them.”
Commenting on the incident after the match that saw him red-carded, along with Mohsni and unused Motherwell substitute Fraser Kerr, Erwin added: “I tried to shake his hand and wish him all the best and he swore at me.
“I pushed him and he reacted badly. A player at a club like that, at that level, should not be acting like that. It’s embarrassing for him and the club. I wish him all the best.”
On Twitter after the game, Erwin posted: “What a day. Great result and performance from the boys. I thought the boxing was on last night but? #embarrassing.”
