Gales alert, but heatwave is on the way

-

HEAVY rain and gale force winds are expected to batter Glasgow later today.

Gale warnings have been issued and drivers were advised to take care on the roads.

Severe gale force winds are due to hit the city at about 6pm.

The weather warning is in place until 6pm tomorrow.

However, forecasters have said the end of the depressing weather is in sight, with sunnier weather expected towards the end of the week.

Rain and gales are set to be replaced by sunshine, with the mercury expected to hit 20C this weekend in Scotland.

A Met Office spokesman said: “Over the next few days what we will see is the jetstream move to the north, which will mean the pressure builds bringing better weather.

“Today it is downhill again. Winds will strengthen during the afternoon and it will become very wet and windy across all areas by evening.

“We could see severe gales across the islands and it is likely we are going to be issuing a yellow ‘be aware’ wind warning, because of the time of the year.”

The change is expected to begin on Wednesday through to Friday, when pressure builds with much drier and much sunnier weather.

He added: “By the time we get to Friday we could be seeing temperatures of 20 or 21C with more sun- shine and lighter winds.

“It follows a bad May. It was not the wettest, but it was very wet up until May 27, when we had 149 per cent of rainfall we would normally see in the month. That does not include the last couple of days, which have been very wet.

“Mean temperatures have been 1.2 degrees below average.”
