Swimming centre is in line fora£3.75mmake-over
Upgrades for most of the pool’s systems are in the pipeline
A £3.75MILLION upgrade is on the cards for Tollcross International Swimming Centre.
On Thursday, city councillors will be asked to approve the work, which will involve a new roof as well as a number of internal improvements as part of a planned maintenance programme.
They will include better lighting, a new boiler plant and upgrading the swimming pool floating floor and water quality monitoring systems, all of which are nearing the end of their useful life.
The work will also improve the building’s energy performance.
Councillors will be told the upgrade is needed to meet the needs of the local community and attract major international events.
Tollcross, which opened in 1997, is Scotland’s top swimming venue and one of the largest of its kind in Europe.
It is also home to one of the best-equipped and most popular Glasgow Club health and fitness centres.
A previous £14m extension to the building was completed in May 2013 following 19 months of building work carried out in advance of the Commonwealth Games.
It added a new 50metre warmup pool and a new community wing to replace the fire damaged Shettleston Burgh Halls.
The swim centre now includes a 10 lane, 50metre competition pool, a six lane 50metre warm-up pool and 2000 permanent seats.
Over the years, Tollcross has hosted some of the world’s top events including the Commonwealth Games swimming compe- tition and the 2015 IPC Swimming World Championships.
Glasgow Life chairman Archie Graham said: “Over the years Tollcross International Swimming Centre has been the scene of many memorable sporting moments, not least during the Commonwealth Games.
“It is also a hugely popular community leisure centre attracting thousands of people on a weekly basis who use the swimming pools and state-ofthe-art Glasgow Club health and fitness facilities to train and keep fit.
“This investment will safeguard the venue’s position as home to some of the world’s leading swimming events and as one of the top sports centres in the country.”
