GOLDEN YEARS OF GLASGOWAIRPORT

- By ANN FOTHERINGHAM

WERE you there when the Queen officially opened Glasgow Airport?

Perhaps you remember the terminal being built, or were involved in the construction?

Or maybe you simply have happy memories of flying out, or coming home?

Whatever your airport story, we want to hear it.

To coincide with Glasgow Airport’s 50th anniversary celebrations, the Evening Times is collecting photographs and stories from some of the many millions of travellers who have passed through its doors.

Amanda McMillan, managing director of Glasgow Airport explained: “This year marks a very special anniversary for Glasgow Airport as we celebrate our 50th year of operation.

“Over the past five decades we have witnessed an industry which has evolved and transformed, from the arrival of Concorde to the A380, to the rise of the package holiday and the growth of budget air travel.

“The people of Glasgow have been at the heart of the airport’s journey, and without them we could not have grown and flourished in the way we have.”

Amanda added: “To mark our golden year we are eager to uncover any special memories, pictures or anecdotes that the people of Glas- gow have of the airport from the past 50 years.

“Anything from fond farewells to happy hellos, family holidays to first business flights – whatever it is, we want to know about it.

“At Glasgow Airport we have welcomed millions of passengers through our doors and in our golden anniversary year we expect to have a record breaking number of passengers, reaching nine million for the first time in our history.

“I’d like to urge everyone to take this chance to take a trip back in time and help us create a full picture of our airport’s history.”

The celebrations, which will coincide with the first flights, which took place on May 2, 1966 and the official opening by the Queen on June 27 that same year frame an exciting year for the airport.

As well as welcoming two new carriers, Air Canada Rouge and Air France, and a new service to Montreal with Air Transat, the airport will unveil details of its terminal redevelopment plan.
