Ferguson: We’ve stopped the rot at perfect time

- By GRAEME McGARRY

CLYDE boss Barry Ferguson has praised his players for proving a point by sealing their playoff place with Saturday’s win over Stirling Albion.

The 3-1 victory means the Bully Wee finished in third position, and they will now play Elgin City in the semi-finals of the promotion play-offs, with the first leg at Broadwood on Tuesday night.

After a run of poor results cost them the chance of the League Two title, the former Rangers and Scotland midfielder was pleased with the reaction of his players.

“The most important thing was that we got a result today,” he said. “That’s what I asked the boys to do, to go and get the three points. Now it’s Elgin, and all these games are tough. It’s a fair journey for us on Saturday.

“We need to go and take the game to them and see where it takes us.

“I’ll be looking for more of the same, we played some good football against Stirling.

“We kind of slackened off after they got the man sent off and took our foot off the gas, but overall we were miles better.

“The guys haven’t handled the pressure great over the last couple of months, and they know that they have let themselves down.

“I sensed in training that they knew they had something to go and prove, and they did that with their performance.” Ferguson knows that his side will have to be at their best again over the two games against Elgin to keep their promotion dream alive.

He said: “Elgin are a good team, they were at the top of the league for a long time.

“They are a strong team. It will be a tough game between two evenly matched teams.” Ferguson went with an attacking 4-4-2 formation against Stirling and, with a lack of available personnel, he may be forced to take a similar approach on Tuesday.

“I’ve not got any players to change it,” he said.

“We’ve got a few key players out, but we won’t be using that as an excuse.” Meanwhile, the Bully Wee have announced that David Wiseman has been co-opted on to the board of directors.

Wiseman will assume responsibility for corporate governance and will work closely with chief executive David Douglas on the supporter engagement project to review the club’s objectives.
