Cinema could be set for ‘4DX’ revolution

- By CAROLINE WILSON

THE movie experience is about to get a lot more realistic at the world’s tallest cinema.

Cineworld in Glasgow’s Renfrew Street is currently undergoing major renovations.

And while Cineworld are staying tight-lipped about details of the refurb, the Evening Times has learned it is likely to include state-of-the-art 4DX technology.

Cinema-goers will enjoy high-tech motion seats with special effects simulating wind, fog, lightning, bubbles, water, rain and scents, in both 2D and 3D formats.

The company is opening 10 of the 4DX cinema experiences within the next year, following a successful trial in Milton Keynes and it is understood Glasgow is among them.

Cineworld say the effects work in perfect synchronicity with the action on screen “cre- ating the most unmissable and exhilarating cinematic experience yet.”

However, reviews have been mixed at the Milton Keynes Cineworld where the technology was introduced last year.

One customer posted on review site Trip Advisor: “The wind effect were pointless, the smoke was like someone puffed out cigarette smoke and was annoying, and the wind blowing in your ears (bullet shots) was very annoying as it felt like someone was blowing in your ear all the time.

“Water that did spray out was feeble.

However another movie fan gave the experience a five out of five rating and described the experience as “amazing”.

She posted: “It you love the cinema than you have to give this a go.”

Developed in South Korea, 4DX is widely considered to be the biggest innovation in cinematic technology to date.

A VIP area serving hot food will also be added to the Renfrew Street cinema.

A spokesman for Glasgow City Council said an application for a “major variation” to the licence had been lodged.

The seating in all screens will also be upgraded as well as the reception area on the ground floor of the building, which is currently sealed off to Cineworld customers.

According to cinema sources, the renovations are due to be completed by August.

A spokeswoman for Cineworld said: “There are some really exciting developments in the pipeline for Cineworld Renfrew Street – we can’t wait to unveil these soon – watch this space.”
