Flats plan for historic church site
PLANS have been drawn up to convert a historic city church into flats.
Shettleston Housing Association has applied for permission to create 19 flats at the “dilapidated” Carntyne Old Church.
The local landmark at the junction of Wellshot Road and Shettleston Road, which dates back to 1894, was bought by the housing association in 2009.
It wants to convert the church into flats within the shell of the existing building with the vestry of the church being turned into a self contained family house.
A new build, five storey flatted block with a glazed link to the existing church will complete the development.
The link building will contain a passenger lift and communal stairs and lobby spaces and will sit on the site of the now demolished church hall.
Work has been carried out to consolidate an abandoned mineshaft, allowing the new block to be part of the overall development.
A report to city council planning bosses says: “The propos- al is to regenerate and revitalise the important building. It will represent a real milestone for the area, bringing life back to the important corner.”
Some 60 residents have objected to a suggestion that visitors to the flats could use nearby Edrom Court for parking after the council was told to delete the requirement for parking at the church site.
