Halliday: I’ll play hard for the jersey
ANDY HALLIDAY reckons he has laid down a marker of his Ibrox intentions this term as he looks to make his presence felt in the new-look Rangers midfield.
The 24-year-old has enjoyed a solid start to the season as Mark Warburton’s side have seen off Motherwell, Annan and East Stirlingshire in the Betfred Cup.
Halliday set the Gers on the road to victory at Ochilview on Friday night as he converted from the spot after 10 minutes before Josh Windass and Joe Dodoo netted in either half.
The arrival of Joey Barton, Niko Kranjcar and Matt Crooks has given boss Warburton plenty of options in the middle of the park.
And Halliday is determined to retain his place at the heart of the Light Blues line-up and play his part in the push for title glory this term.
He said: “Good players welcome good players, and all these good players we have brought in will help us strive to our one goal, and that’s going for 55.
“Nobody should write me off, though, as I won’t be giving up my place lightly. When you play for this club, you need to earn the jersey, and someone has to take it from me.
“It’s pleasing to be off the mark for the season, and I love it when Waggy doesn’t play as I know I always have a chance of scoring a penalty!
“I’m not expecting as many goals this season, but if I can get anywhere near the double figures I got last year, I’ll be happy.
“I’ve already played quite a few games in the deeper role, but I won’t be setting any targets for this season.
“I’m still taking it upon myself to take the penalties, even though I’ve missed a couple now, but it doesn’t bother me.”
