- By HANNAH RODGER

A HOST of rock legends who performed at an outdoor city music festival have been given prestigious awards.

Del Amitri, Primal Scream and The Waterboys were all inducted in to the Barrowland Hall of Fame this week following their performances at the Kelvingrove Bandstand.

Thousands of people have visited the outdoor venue on Kelvin Way over the past 10 days for the Summer Nights festival.

Justin Currie of Del Amitri, who played on Wednesday, was given the gong on behalf of his band.

On Thursday night, Glasgow lad Bobby Gillespie was presented with the accolade for Primal Scream, while on Monday, Mike Scott of folk rockers The Waterboys was presented with their award.

Billy Coyle, one of the founders of the Clutha Trust and organiser of the Barrowlands Hall of Fame said: “We wanted to honour these three bands as they have all done something to make the Barras what it is, and promote it as a venue.

“The Waterboys were picked as they play the Barrowland all the time, and Mike Scott is always advocating for the venue.

“They always play there every time they tour, and have been since the 80s.

“I think Mike was genuinely surprised to get the award.

“Del Amitri’s Justin Currie said it was always his aim to play there and go there when he was younger, and Primal Scream advocate the place. Their favourite memo- ries always seem to be in the Barrowland.

“Andrew Innes said: ‘At last, an award worth receiving,’ when Primal Scream got theirs. I think they were all pleased.”

The hall of fame project was set up to recognise musicians who have contributed in some way to the Barrowland’s success and help to make it one of the best in the country.

Music fans from across the UK flock to the legendary ballroom for its acoustics, vintage feel and sprung dancefloor.

Along with an award, inductees will have their names carved on a plaque and hung on the stairs of the well-loved venue.

The three latest groups join fellow inductees including Noel Gallagher, Big Country, Paul Weller, the Stereophonics and David Bowie, among others.
