Neighbours’ appeal to help family in New Year tragedy

- By CAROLINE WILSON

A GLASGOW community has rallied to help the family of a Polish man who died on New Year’s Day while visiting his grandchildren.

Grzegorz Przybyla, 64, suffered a massive heart attack on Boxing Day at the home of his daughter Ilona Adamcczyk in Priesthill.

Mr Przybyla, had travelled from Poland with his wife Danuta, 59, to spend Christmas with Ilona her husband Marcian and their three young children.

After being rushed to the Golden Jubilee Hospital in Clydebank he fell into a coma and his wife and daughter had to make the agonising decision to switch off his life support machine on New Year’s Day. The family have revealed that they agreed for Mr Przybyla’s organs to be donated.

Neighbours of Ilona and Marcian are now trying to raise funds to help Mr Przybyla’s widow take his ashes back home to Poland for burial as the couple had no insurance and both retired.

Mr Adamczyk said: “We have lived in Glasgow for more than 10 years. Ilona’s parents arrived here on December 15 and they were planning to return home to Poland next week. My father-in-law suffered a heart attack last Tuesday, first thing in the morning.

“He was taken to hospital and was in a coma. There were trying to wake him up but a CT scan showed he had severe brain dam- age and they said he couldn’t be resuscitated. My wife and her mother decided to switch off his life support on Sunday. They was no choice.

“They decided to donate his organs. His corneas, heart valves and skin will be donated. We managed to get enough money for the cremation here but he will have to have a proper burial in Poland.”

Sadie Masters, a neighbour of the couple has set up a Go Fund Me page to help cover the funeral expenses.

She said: “The family is devastated. They were never prepared for this, he was never in bad health and they were not insured.

“The money will be used to arrange funeral in Poland were Mr Przybyla came from. The burial should take place as soon as possible. We would be very thankful with any help.”
