MILLER PLEA TO GERS ACE BARRIE

First pick every week for Warbs Revelling in the Ibrox spotlight Miller tips star to keep shining

- By CHRIS JACK

KENNY MILLER has backed Rangers star Barrie McKay to handle any transfer talk and continue to shine at Ibrox this season.

The winger has once again caught the eye for Mark Warburton’s side this term and the Englishman is keen to secure his services on a new long-term contract.

McKay’s current deal expires next summer but Miller hopes there is plenty more to come from the 22-year-old in Light Blue. He told SportTimes: “Barrie has been in the team pretty much since the manager came to the club 18 months ago. He has had his

ups, he has had his downs. He has had spells where he has been very good and he has had spells where he has been quieter.

“He is 22 and there is a real spotlight on him now playing for Rangers every week.

“He is a young player in the team, he has been linked with £6million moves to the team that is second in the Bundesliga and that is huge for him.

“All I can say is that I would love him to be in the team and he is performing at a really high level.

“For me, he has been at the highest level and the most consistent since the manager has come in.”

McKay has made 28 appearances for Warburton’s side so far this season and will be expected to play a key role in Rangers’ bid for second spot in the Premiership and Scottish Cup glory in the coming months.

His fine form in the Championship last term saw him rewarded with a call-up to the Scotland squad by boss Gordon Strachan.

And Miller is pleased to see the forward hitting the heights in recent weeks after a temporary drop in form last year.

He said: “If they are being linked they are doing something right and the manager wouldn’t have it any other way.

“He wouldn’t mind the window shutting and him still being here. But having that link means the manager is doing something right, the coaches are doing something right and the player himself is doing something right.

“For Barrie to operate, he needs Lee Wallace behind him doing his job, supplying him and helping him like he can. He needs the midfielders to do what they do so Barrie can do what he does.”
