Courthearshowdrunken man attacked taxi driver

-

A DRUNK man attacked a taxi driver and kicked his cab after he was told he could not take him where he wanted to go.

Michael Clinton also spat in a policeman’s face when he stepped in to try and restrain him.

The 47-year-old flagged down a taxi at Queen Street on January 19, 2015 around 3.40pm and asked the driver to take him to Clydebank.

The driver said he was unable to go there at the time, and advised him to try another cab.

However Clinton became enraged and started shouting and swearing at him. He then kicked the taxi window and threatened the driver.

Nearby on Queen Street, police officers were made aware of the situation and came to the driver’s aid.

They handcuffed Clinton when they saw how he was behaving but he then assaulted one of officers and spat in his face.

Drunken Clinton shouted “What you saying, you f***ing d**k” as he was being apprehended by police.

On Monday January 23, Clinton was sentenced to a three-month restriction order by Sheriff Kelly when he appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court.

He previously plead guilty to two charges of threatening the taxi driver and assaulting a police officer.

His restrictions mean he will have to stay at home between 7pm and 7am every night until April.

Addressing his actions, his solicitor said Clinton “has recognised alcohol to be the root of his problems” and said he has “remained out of trouble for a substantial period of time”.

The court heard that Clinton has been free from booze for the last 12 months, and the incident had “acted as a catalyst for examining his difficulties.”

His solicitor said: “He has managed to remain abstinent from alcohol for a year now. He accepts this is not an excuse. This was a serious matter.

“He has remained alcohol free for 12 months. He accepts that this is the beginning of the process.”

The court heard Clinton has continued to keep in touch with Glasgow City Council’s social work department and continues to get help for his problems with alcohol.
