Class swap for oldest and youngest fitness fanatics

- By CATRIONA STEWART

GLASGOW Club’s oldest and youngest fitness fans swapped places for the day.

John Millar, 81, and Lucy Mullen, 15, both attend Glasgow Club Scotstoun and use their membership on their favourite classes.

But the pair, who went to the same school 75 years apart, agreed to try out the other’s exercise routines.

Lucy uses the Glasgow Club to swim and attend Les Mills classes while John goes to G-Cycle classes and uses cardiovascular equipment in the gym.

To mark Glasgow Club’s In It Together campaign, Lucy took on a G-Cycle class and John tried his hand at a CXWORX class.

John, who has been a member of the Glasgow Club since 2011, is a retired chartered engineer and is wellknown by all the Scotstoun staff.

He said: “I first joined the Glasgow Club five years ago and have been attending every day since – living across the road from the Scotstoun centre means I’ve got no excuse.

“The instructors who take the classes and the staff in the gym are so encouraging and helpful, it really does make all the difference. I’ve lost five and a half stones since joining and I credit that to exercising with the Glasgow Club and a healthy diet as a Weight Watchers member.”

Lucy is an S4 pupil at Jordanhill School – the same school John attended in 1941 – and she’s been using the Glasgow Club Scotstoun since she was a baby, going swimming with her mum and attending gymnastics classes.

She now swims there every morning and then hits the gym or a class after school.

The teenager said: “I really love keeping fit and the Glasgow Club Scotstoun is the perfect place for me to do that – there’s so much on offer and I enjoy making the most of my membership.

“Taking the class with John was good fun – and it was great to do a class with him and I was really amazed by the fact he does that every day.”
