Chaos as student rush crashes college website
WOULD-BE students were left frustrated after a college website collapsed under the volume of applications.
More than 3500 hopefuls piled on to the City of Glasgow College website when the applications portal opened on Wednesday morning.
The college said the site was back up within a couple of hours following huge demand.
A spokesman for the college said: “Due to the high volume of applications, we experienced some technical issues.
“However, t hese were quickly resolved and almost 3500 applications were processed on the first day.”
Although an error message was still present on the college’s website on Thursday afternoon, bosses said the site problems had been resolved on Wednesday morning.
A member of college staff, who asked to remain anonymous, said: “Course admissions were in technical melt- down. Online applications were due to open for course admissions to coincide with the admissions launch with Glasgow Kelvin College and Glasgow Clyde College.
“However due to their website failure and various IT issues prospective students were unable to apply for their chosen courses.”
The online applications system is open until the end of August. The college would routinely attract around four applications for each of the 10,000 places.
The college spokesman said there would be no impact on the applications of anyone who tried to apply on Wednesday.
