A GLASGOW sheriff told a Hibs fans he had narrowly missed a jail sentence after he stormed on to Hampden and punched a man on the head.

Alexander Lannie, 23, admitted that after the Scottish Cup final match between Rangers and Hibs on May 21 at Hampden he engaged in in behaviour which was likely to incite public disorder by running on to the pitch towards the opposing supporters, gesticulating in an aggressive manner towards Rangers fans and engaging in a fight with a rival fan.

He also admitted assaulting David McDonald by repeatedly punching him in the head and body and knocked him to the ground to his injury.

The court heard that Lannie, from Livingston, got involved in a stand-up fight before then punching a man in the face.

Policed traced him and took him to his closest police station on July 14, last year.

Representing himself Lannie said: “I’m ashamed by my actions. I was taken by the heat of the moment.”

Sentencing, sheriff Cameron said: “There are two things keeping you out of jail.

“One is that you are working and the second is that this is your first offence.

Lannie was order to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work.

He was also given a £400 and ordered to pay £250 compensation to the man he assaulted.
