Petrol station robbery foiled

- By STACEY MULLEN Crime Reporter

A BRAVE petrol station worker bolted from a robber who threatened her with a weapon before demanding cash from the till.

The 51-year-old woman was working in the Esso Service Station on Drygate Street in Larkhall on Monday, January 23, at around 8.30pm when the attempted robbery took place.

The man entered the petrol station, presented a weapon before demanding that the service assistant hand over money from the till.

The service assistant refused and ran out of the store, raising the alarm with nearby business owners.

The suspect made off from the scene, empty-handed and along Drygate Street towards Station Road.

Police, who made an appeal to find the suspect yesterday, say the woman was uninjured as a result of the incident, and no-one else was present within the store.

The suspect is described as a white man with a local accent, around 5ft 8in and medium build.

At the time of the incident, he was wearing dark clothing, scarf and was carrying a black holdall, and was wearing glasses.

Detective Constable Ruth Whyte, from Cambuslang CID, is appealing for information.

She said: “Our inquiries are continuing to trace the cowardly individual who attempted and failed to rob the Service Station. No-one should be placed in a state of fear or alarm as they go about their daily lives.

“We have conducted local inquiries and are continuing to assess CCTV to help identify the suspect.

“I would ask anyone with any information to get in contact. You may have seen a man in dark clothing hanging about the area in a suspicious manner before the attempted robbery or running along Drygate Street following the incident.”
