Mart: We Can stop the slide in Highlands

- By MARK RYAN

MARTIN CANNING is looking for Hamilton to halt the slide against relegation rivals Inverness on Tuesday night following their 3-0 defeat at St Johnstone on Saturday.

Not for the first time this season Accies were made to pay for spurning chances, when a Graham Cummins double and a Murray Davidson header after the interval gave Saints three Ladbrokes Premiership points. Hamilton have gone 12 league games without a win and are above bottom side Caley Thistle by a single goal, which makes their midweek meeting at the SuperSeal stadium so crucial.

Canning is keen to stretch further away from the visitors with a much-needed win.

“We want to get back into it,” said the Accies boss. “The one thing we generally have done well is if we have had a poor performance, a poor result, we have bounced back well in the next game. And there is none more important than Tuesday.”

Canning, however, fears Accies will pay for their profligacy. He said: “That’s the way it is looking. We can’t keep sitting here saying we are not taking opportunities.

“If you can’t score and keep conceding then you’re on a hiding to nothing. The way we’re set up is right – it was proven as we were the better team for 50 minutes. I don’t know if it’s a mental block.”

Saints manager Tommy Wright hopes Cummins’ goals – his first since September – will help the Irishman’s confidence.

He said: “Strikers want to score goals but there are other attributes they bring like leading the line. He has done that without much success in front of goal.

“Hopefully that will give him the impetus to kick on.”
