GLASGOW MEANS BUSINESS

- With Holly Lennon WHO ARE YOU? Margaret Shenken, Fuse-Fit

WHAT DOES YOUR BUSINESS DO? We train fitness instructors to deliver our female fitness class, a fusion of dance fitness and dynamic sculpt moves for women. The whole class concept changes with each new programme and includes a full health and fitness package including weight management tools.

Is aimed at women aged 30-55 who are intimidated by the gym environment and want a class that is fun but delivers results. We empower women to become the best version of themselves by improving their fitness, their diet and their mindset. WHERE ARE YOU BASED? The South Side of Glasgow HOW DID YOU GET STARTED? I qualified as a group fitness instructor and started my Fuse-Fit classes in 2012 in a small hall initially with classes of three – four people. I knew with commitment and business development numbers would increase and now my classes are full (30 people) and consistently sold out with waiting lists. I am also a qualified personal trainer and nutritionist and created Fuse-Fit because everything on the market was either extreme and intimidating or fun but ineffective. WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND? I was a lawyer for ten years then left to start a family and now have three children. WHAT IS YOUR TOP TIP? Don’t be so hard on yourself! HAS ANYONE HELPED YOU GET STARTED AND HOW? I am currently in the process of upscaling the business on the Entrepreneurial Spark business accelerator programme. WHAT WAS YOUR BIGGEST MISTAKE/OR WHAT WOULD YOU DO DIFFERENTLY? When I started I had a ‘lawyer’ mindset and sought perfection and precision all the time. Entrepreneurism doesn’t work like that as you have to move forward at a very fast pace, especially in the fitness industry. My motto now is “If it’s good enough, move on”. WHO IS YOUR INSPIRATION? A woman called Olivia Giles. She worked in the same law firm as me and in 2002, she caught meningococcal septicaemia and had to have her hands and feet amputated to save her life. After her treatment, she founded the charity 500 miles, which supplies prosthetic limbs to developing countries. WHERE DO YOU PLAN YOUR BUSINESS TO BE IN FIVE YEARS’ TIME? Leading world expert in female health and fitness.
