Shops plan for derelict pub site

-

A DERELICT site in Balornock could be transformed into a new complex of local shops.

The land fronts on to a traffic roundabout at the junction of Broomfield Road, Rye Road and Ryehill Road.

A large, unsightly brick building, which was last occupied by the Broomfield Tavern, occupies the site.

It was recently the site of a major fire, which a report to the city council says has further contributed to the depressed and derelict nature of the area.

The report adds: “For many years, the area suffered from a lack of investment. The housing stock was dilapidated and run down and there was a pervading air of neglect.

“Substantial stock clearance has been carried out and a number of new residen- tial developments have been built or are in the process of construction. The area is undergoing a major transformation with an emphasis on providing an attractive residential environment.”

The planning application by Blackstone Properties involves demolishing the existing building and creating a small hub of five shops.

They would include a pharmacy and other services for community, possibly including a dental practice.

Interest has also been received from a sandwich outlet, cafe and bookmakers which would replace the existing bookies which will need to be relocated.

The report says: “The design has been developed to deliver a modern representation of the traditional small parade of shops so common across the city.”
