Bus gift has group on road to easing transport worry

- By HANNAH RODGER

A DISABILITY group has received a generous donation to help dozens of service users.

Drumchapel’s Antonine group, which runs a day centre for people who have disabilities, was given a new bus by SPT.

The organisation said service users were previously having to wait up to an hour to get home as their two small cars could take just a few of its 25 members at once.

Councillor Malcolm Balfour, SNP councillor for the area, had contacted SPT on the group’s behalf to ask if it would be possible to help with a donation.

Now the transport firm has agreed to provide the bus, as well as a package of maintenance, which will help to “transform” the group’s ability to further help its members.

Louise Lawson, Antonine Court centre manager, said: “This is absolutely fantastic and it means we can help everyone get home from the centre at the same time.

“It has really saved us having to buy another vehicle to do that. Now all the service users are not going to be waiting around for a long time so someone can take them home, it is a massive help.

“We have members from all over the place. Our remit stretches from Springburn out to Knightswood and Yoker, so having some mode of transport where we can accommodate more people will save us time and money.”

Councillor Balfour said: “I am so pleased SPT were able to step in and help this group, who do such an important job in the community of Drumchapel but also further afield.

“There are many people who would be stuck at home or be isolated without them and they are a huge asset to the community. They deserve this support and I am glad I could do my bit to help.”

A SPT spokeswoman said: “SPT supports many community based transport groups and is delighted to assist in this project which will help members of the community continue to access services.”
