Here come the baby boys at women’s 10k race event

- By CAROLINE WILSON

BOYS are to be allowed to take part in this year’s Glasgow’s women’s 10k for the first time.

But the UK’s favourite women-only 10k race isn’t about to change the rules and become a mixed event.

A new 3k taster race will include a mummies and buggies wave which the organisers said will, of course, include baby boys.

Mothers and babies will be given a dedicated slower wave at the back of the crowds.

The organisers of the Great Women’s Run say the 3k is the perfect distance for anyone who is new or returning to running such as new mums who don’t want to run the full 6.2 miles.

The new 3k event was launched yesterday at Kelvingrove Art Gallery by mums from Glasgow Club’s Fit for Two Classes.

The classes are set up to allow mums to bring their baby along while working out.

The Women’s 10K, organised by the Great Run Company, is taking place on Sunday, June 4 and will follow the same new route as last year, starting from Kelvin Way with a few tweaks including the removal of a double-back section on Dumbarton Road.

More than 6,000 women took part in last year’s event which was won by Gemma Rankin of Kilbarchan AC with a time of 36:59, claiming victory for the second year in a row.

She was followed home by Sarah Benson who clocked a time of 37:12 with Lesley Chisholm in third place in 37:39.

The 3k course, which is open to runners age 12 and over, will follows the first 1.5k of the main route before turning and heading back down Argyle Street to the finish line.

Entry is £15 for the 3k race and £27 for the 10k. Places for the 3k are limited for the first year so runners are asked to register early to avoid disappointment.

Finishers will receive a special goody bag including a medal, technical T-shirt, water and other treats.
