Apprentices mark flats ceremony
WORK on a £20million block of student flats in Glasgow city centre is nearing completion.
Seven of Graham Construction’s young apprentices gathered on the roof of the 14-storey building in Bath Street to take part in the topping out ceremony.
The event at the purposebuilt development took place during Scottish Apprenticeship week.
All the apprentices are enrolled in the Graham Academy, which was launched by the firm to help combat the industry skills shortage. It offers courses leading to nationally recognised qualifications alongside paid work experience and permanent employment.
Technical apprentice Reiss Fleming, 17, laid the final section of cement in the project which is due for completion in August.
He has been employed by Graham for more than two years. After a spell on work experience, he is now a fulltime apprentice in civil engineering.
Around 100 people from Graham Construction are on the programme.
Company regional direc- tor Gary Holmes said: “Young people represent the future of the industry and we are committed in helping equip them for this future through work placements, traineeships and apprenticeship schemes.”
The Bath Street development at the junction with Pitt Street will deliver 330 single occupancy studio rooms, retail space and basement storage space.
