New locations revealed for city bike hire scheme
THE location of 10 new bike hire sites in Glasgow has been detailed by the council.
The public was asked where they wanted extra pink rental cycle stations to be sited and they have now been chosen.
Some of the additional bikes which are to be introduced will be at new bike stations in some of the less well off parts of the city.
In the city centre, bikes will be located in the Saltmarket/Glasgow Green area with Kelvinhaugh Street chosen as a new location in the West End.
Cycle stops for the Nextbike scheme will also be added at the Citizens Theatre, Shawlands Shopping Centre, Langside Hall and Pollokshaws West Railway Station in the city’s South Side.
Three new areas of the East End were chosen at Dalmarnock and Duke Street railway stations and Alexandra Park.
A new stop will also be added at Speirs Wharf. Installations are due to get underway in early September.
Hundreds of the existing bikes will be replaced in a couple of months with new state-of-the-art models.
The bikes will have a safety feature which projects a “ghost bike” several yards ahead on the road, warning the other drivers and pedestrians a cyclist is approaching. They will also have a new locking system.
Councillor Anna Richardson, City Convener for Sustainability & Carbon Reduction, Glasgow City Council, said: “The feedback from users has been fantastic and with the first 10 new hire locations confirmed, it won’t be long before we see even more people making use of the cycle hire scheme.”
There are currently 435 bikes at 43 stations across the city and they will all be renewed and an additional 65 provided, bringing the total to 500.
Nextbike managing director Julian Scriven said: “I think it is important we make the bikes available to as many people as possible and particularly those who are economically disadvantaged.”
