Volunteer co-ordinators wanted for new project

- By LINDSEY ARCHIBALD

VOLUNTEER co-ordinators are being sought in Glasgow to help kick start a vibrant range of activity groups and clubs for people in later life.

The call is part of a new programme ‘Bring People Together’ being launched by national volunteering charity, Royal Voluntary Service in partnership with Prudential.

The campaign will encourage more people to volunteer, particularly those aged 50-65, but specifically aims to recruit volunteer co-ordinators who may be keen to help run, or start their own activities for older people.

From social activities and hobby classes to running a lunch club or providing companionship to older people in their homes, Royal Voluntary Service and Prudential are looking for people to put their talents and life experience to valuable use and help grow a network of community groups across Great Britain which will improve lives for many years to come. And volunteering is not a one way street. Previous research for Royal Voluntary Service found that older people who volunteer are happier and healthier than their counterparts who don’t.

No previous experience is necessary as full training will be provided. Royal Voluntary Service will also provide guidance on recruiting volunteers to help you, managing money and fundraising and on how to run the activity safely and legally. In return, volunteer co-ordinators can enjoy developing their skills and experience, being part of a team and creating something of lasting value for their community and the people in it.

Danielle McPhilemy, Royal Voluntary Service’s Community Engagement & Development Worker for Glasgow, said: “Our volunteers are amazing and make a huge difference to the lives of thousands of older people each month.

“Many of our volunteers also lead the way by taking on the running of activities or groups, or setting one up from scratch.

“If you’re someone who’s well-organised and enjoys a bit of a challenge, why not become one of our volunteer co-ordinators. We will provide full support along the way and are open to any suggestions from book groups to trampoline classes.”

Eleanor Turner, head of Corporate Responsibility at Prudential, said: “Volunteering is proven to bring massive benefits both to those who give their time and those that get involved in the services they provide.

“Our Bring People Together partnership will help Royal Voluntary Service scale up its services and significantly extend its impact in communities across the UK. Working together, we’re looking forward to making remarkable things happen in your local community.”
