Thousands of volunteers lined up for city’s European Championships
THOUSANDS of volunteers have been recruited for the Glasgow 2018 European Championships.
The team is close to completion with more than two-thirds of roles confirmed and volunteering and training well underway and uniform collections imminent.
Around 10,000 people applied to volunteer at Glasgow 2018 which brings together the existing European Championships of some of the continent’s major sports of Aquatics, Cycling, Gymnastics, Rowing and Triathlon and the brand new Golf Team Championships.
The 4000 volunteer roles will be at the heart of Team 2018 and the experience offered to athletes, officials, media and spectators as they visit Glasgow and Scotland from August 2-12.
Volunteers will work across a diverse range of roles both pre, during and post Championships.
Applicants were invited to skills match sessions at the end of 2017 by the Glasgow 2018 volunteer team, to determine who would be best suited to each of the available roles.
Communities Secretary Angela Constance said: “Team 2018 will be the face of the European Championships and I am confident every single member of this team will showcase all that is great about Scotland and its people.
“There has been such enthusiasm from those who want to take part and in the Year of Young People, it is especially encouraging to know that 30 per cent of the total applicants were aged under 26.”
Volunteer Yash Patel, 18, from Glasgow, said: “I’m really excited to be part of Team 2018. I’m a huge sports fan, so I’m thrilled to be part of such an exciting couple of weeks at the biggest sports event in the city.
“I enjoy volunteering and last year I went to Ghana to teach and coach sports at a school. I’m a real people person so I’m looking forward to chatting with event attendees and passing on my local knowledge.”
