Spotlight on...

WE are kicking off year eight of Streets Ahead in style, by awarding more than £5000 to groups across the city. The magnificent seven projects to benefit are:

Friends of Kelvindale Railway Station – £750 for a statue on the platform, dedicated to the environment with information on cycling, planting and pollinating, and a home for solitary bees and wintering butterflies.

St John Paul II Primary, Castlemilk - £600 for a new greenhouse, shelving and compost to grow plants and food to sell in the community.

Woodlands Lane Project - £500 to help turn a neglected lane at the back of residents’ houses, which has attracted litter and flytipping, into a pleasant meeting place with planters and seating.

Spire View Housing Association - £1000 for cookery classes and healthy eating workshops for families and older people, to help tackle food poverty and isolation.

Govanhill Baths Community Trust - £800 for seating and planting and a public art project to improve the street outside the baths.

Friends of Southern Necropolis - £1500 for a Resurrecting and Preserving History project with local schools. The money will provide 100 packs for children from three local schools and would include work booklets, air dry clay for model headstones, achievement medals and certificates; plus art materials for a World War One project.

Friends of Queen’s Park - £250 for hi-vis vests worn by the volunteers who weed, tidy, plant and litter pick in the park, giving up their free time in all weathers.
