Brown left gutted as Tigers crash out in semi-final of season finale

-

GLASGOW boss Cami Brown admitted it was “hard to take” as his team were cruelly put out of the Championship play-offs by a single point.

The Tigers were beaten 52-38 at Workington tonight, having won the first leg of their semi-final 51-38.

They pushed the Comets all the way to the last heat – but a 3-3 was enough to send the Cumbrians through to a final spot against either Lakeside or Peterborough.

Brown said: “We tried really hard right to the last race, but we’re absolutely gutted as a club and as a management.

“To lose by a single point is hard at the best of times, but in a league play-off semi-final it’s hard to take.

“We’re all pretty low at the moment. The club deserves some success and we were one point away from making the final – and a final we thought was very winnable.

“We’re not overly happy with the referee’s performance tonight but at the end of the day we lost the match, we just have to suck it up – the records will show that we lost.”

Workington flew from the starts to begin with and had pulled the aggregate score to within one point by heat six.

A 4-2 in heat eight, followed by two 5-1s for the home team, put them seven ahead overall and the tie seemed lost to the Tigers. But they fought back through two wins from guest Ricky Wells and a fired-up Claus Vissing to give themselves a chance going into the last two races, from which the Tigers would have needed at least one advantage to qualify.

The result brings Glasgow’s season to an end and they will look back on injuries to Craig Cook and Nathan Greaves as playing their part – although Wells proved a decent replacement for the No 1 today, dropping just four points from nine races.
