Clyde College’s new hospice link is a thing of beauty

- BY ANN FOTHERINGHAM

A BEAUTY salon with a difference has opened its doors on Glasgow’s south side.

As well as pampering its customers and helping to train talented local students, the new business aims to raise money for charity into the bargain.

Beauty With a Conscience, on Battlefield Road, is a new partnership between Glasgow Clyde College and the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice.

It has been able to get off the ground thanks to funding of £41,000 from Glasgow Clyde Education Foundation, which supports new approaches to learning for the students and communities served by the college.

The salon will offer customers a wide range of beauty treatments, including manicures and pedicures, eyelash and eyebrow shaping, make up and facial waxing, all carried out by students on the college’s NC Beauty Care and Make Up course using ethically sourced products where possible.

All profits will go to the hospice, which opened a new state of the art building this year.

Glasgow Clyde College, which has around 16,000 students is based in the south and west of the city.

The Glasgow Clyde Education Foundation was established in 2014 and since then, has granted nearly £8 million to projects which explore new ways to make learning more effective for students, improve the quality of teaching and how it is delivered, and support capital projects.

Julie Wales, head of Curriculum Hairdressing, Beauty and Complementary Therapies, Glasgow Clyde College, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for our students to gain vital work experience in the industry, while giving back to society.

“We have been fundraising for the new hospice for the last few years, so this is a really wonderful way to cement our long term support for the charity, while helping our own students.

“We are proud to be part of such a fantastic project.”
