Tributes to graffiti artist after train track tragedy

HEARTFELT tributes have been paid to the young man who was electrocut­ed to death on the train line close to Dumbreck this week.

Glasgow graffiti artist Grant Hamilton, also known as Mode, from Penilee, was pronounced dead at the scene early on Tuesday morning.

A 29-year-old man, from Glasgow, was arrested on suspicion of trespass and vandalism in connection with the incident.

Among the tributes was from an arts supply store in Edinburgh.The Edinburgh store, Mainline, wrote on its Facebook page: “Sad news. RIP Mode WMD. Thoughts go out to all family, crew and close ones. Brings home the reality of painting graffiti in risky places. Stay safe out there.”

“Legend in Glasgow. Rest in paint, bro,” read another tribute from a friend.

One man wrote: “Never knew the guy personally but saw hands and throws everywhere. Certainly a big player in the scene. RIP, Mode. Thoughts go out to friends family and crew.”

“My boy. True legend,” was another.

One man said: “At times, Grant gave me the fear, but would never have wished death on him. Rest in peace, Grant / Mode WMD. Hope the family, friends and crew are doing okay.”

The Evening Times first reported on the incident on Tuesday. Morning rush-hour services between Glasgow Central and Paisley Gilmour Street had been disrupted amid an incident.

Emergency services were dealing with the incident near the railway between both stations that morning.

This resulted in disruption for trains travelling between Glasgow Central and Ardrossan Harbour, Ayr, Gourock, Largs and Wemyss Bay.

British Transport Police (BTP) confirmed to the Evening Times first that a person had been injured on the tracks who was then pronounced dead at the scene.

A BTP spokeswoma­n said: “Shortly after 1am on December 4, our officers were called to the line close to Dumbreck following reports that a person had been injured on the tracks.

“Officers attended the location alongside colleagues from Police Scotland and the ambulance service, however, a person was sadly pronounced dead at the scene after sustaining serious injuries believed to be caused by electrocut­ion. A 29-year-old man, from Glasgow, has been arrested on suspicion of trespass and vandalism in connection with the incident.

“An investigat­ion into this incident is now under way.

“Police are asking that anyone who was near Dumbreck station at the time and saw anything to please get in touch.

“Anyone who witnessed the incident or with informatio­n should contact BTP by sending a text to 61016, or by calling 0800 40 50 40.”
