City braced for blizzards and delays after winter weather warning

-

A WEATHER warning has been issued for Glasgow this weekend as snow and ice are set to batter the city.

Christmas shoppers have been urged to be careful on slippery roads and pavements.

An army of 160 vehicles with 120 tonnes of grit and salt will take to the streets tonight to prepare for the weather.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow over the city between midday on Saturday and 10am on Sunday.

It said public transport delays were possible and the city could see power cuts, while injuries are possible from slips on icy surfaces.

Low temperatures mean the city could also see freezing rain and ice on Saturday night.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Steve Willington said: “At the moment, the heaviest snow is expected over higher ground in Scotland with the chance of drifting snow due to strong winds.

“Snow is also expected to settle at lower levels in Scotland and parts of northern England, with the risk of freezing rain and ice on Saturday night.”

The official warning suggests the city could see as much as 20cm of snow in higher areas.

Around 900km of roads will be gritted every day that cold weather is forecast, Glasgow City Council said.

Top-priority main roads, key bus routes and roads around schools will be gritted first, and 1500 grit bins around the city have been filled for locals to use.

Roads in local shopping areas, around health centres, day care centres and sports centres will be treated during the snow.

The council revealed it has a stock of 24,000 tonnes of grit ready for cold weather over the coming months.
