Gordon warns the Accies: We’re stuck in basement battle

-

HAMILTON ace Ziggy Gordon has warned his teammate they are in a relegation dogfight.

And Gordon insists Accies cannot think because they have pulled off remarkable great escapes in the past it will automatically happen again.

Hamilton have defied the odds to beat the drop in the last four seasons since being promoted to the top flight through the 2014 Premiership play-off.

And Gordon insists Hamilton, who are four points above Dundee and bottom club St Mirren, cannot rely on relegation rivals losing and must quickly reproduce the battling qualities that saw them stay up in previous campaigns.

Gordon said: “The most important thing is sticking together and that’s something we’re going to have to do throughout the season because we’re in a dogfight, there is no mistake about that.

“We’ve got to scrap for every single point and in every single minute of the game.

“There’s a realisation now. I’ve had this realisation now for the last couple of months.

“The fact Dundee have picked up now and St Mirren have picked up points has maybe hit home that we need to get results and we can’t just hope that other teams don’t win.

“I’m working hard, the lads are working hard and the management staff are working hard to try to put some wrongs right.

“We’ve managed to get out of trouble in the past but you can’t count on that. Yes we’ve got experience of being down here but that doesn’t mean you’re going to win games.

“At the end of the day you need to go out and put on performances that are worthy of winning games and I feel we have done that but haven’t got the point. I’m sure Dundee and St Mirren will be saying the same thing.

“We’ve got to figure out ways to win games.”

Hamilton head to Ibrox on Sunday and Gordon believes they can draw on their 2-0 win over Rangers there last season.

But he knows they are going to have to play at their maximum and defend for their lives to get a result that can kickstart their climb away from danger.

He said: “It’s a different Rangers team and different players here now as well.

“All we can take is belief from that. I’ve gone to Celtic and won there, so every time I go to Celtic Park I believe we can win.

“They are not invincible, they are players just like us.”
