Sturgeon’s 2018 Christmas card celebrates Glasgow-born Benson
LEGENDARY Glasgow photographer Harry Benson captured the city’s Gallery of Modern Art taken for Nicola Sturgeon’s Christmas card.
The photo will be auctioned off to raise money for four charities chosen by the First Minister and Harry.
Money will be given to The Salvation Army Scotland and The Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice, chosen by Harry, and Who Cares? Scotland and Maggie’s centres, chosen by Ms Sturgeon.
The image on the front of her card shows the gallery at night, with lights strung across Royal Exchange Square, and will be sent to the First Minister’s colleagues and friends in politics.
First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said:
“I’m delighted to have such a beautiful photograph from Harry Benson for my Christmas card this year. He is one of our most distinguished photo-journalists with an incredible body of work.
“The four charities that will benefit from the sale of the photograph do fantastic work in Scotland and I’m very pleased that the card can support such a wide range of good causes.”
Glasgow-born photojournalist Harry Benson’s images feature some of his most iconic photographs of world history and rarely-seen shots of his home city.
Harry first travelled to the USA with The Beatles in 1964, during their inaugural tour of the country.
His pictures have since appeared in Life, Vanity Fair, and The New Yorker, while he has also taken more than 100 cover shots for People magazine.
He now lives in Glasgow. He said: “Glasgow is my hometown, a beautifully unique city. When coming home I look forward to walking the city streets to see if anything has changed or disappeared and am relieved to find Glasgow still the same extraordinary city that I love.”
