Eros’ festive wish is to remain top of the tree come January

-

RANGERS winger Eros Grezda is hoping that Rangers can remain at the top of the Premiership tree right through the festive season after going into first place after yesterday’s win over Accies.

Grezda was pleased to go top of the league, but says that the short-term goal for Rangers is to be able to go away and enjoy their winter break looking down on the rest of the division.

Steven Gerrard’s men have three games before a crunch meeting with Celtic at Ibrox on December 29, and Grezda would be over the moon if Rangers were still top of the pile when the final whistle blows that day.

“It is always good to be top of the league but that doesn’t mean anything at this point,” Grezda said.

“There are still four more games to go until the break and we want to still be top then. That is the aim.

“It is going to be tough, but we just have to make sure we recover and treat every game as a final.

“It was tough for us the last time we were top. We have been playing every three days since.

“We have had a lot of players who have played a lot of games and have not had a rest, like Tav [James Tavernier].

“We all need to help each other, stuck together and hopefully we will get there.”

Grezda believes that the title race is wide open, with Celtic’s defeat at Hibs yesterday handing Rangers that opportunity to go top.

The Ibrox side travel to Easter Road on Wednesday, and the Albanian knows that his team will have to be much more ruthless than they were against Hamilton if they are to claim three points and maintain their status as frontrunners.

“Celtic are having a hard time too because they’re playing every three days, so I think opponents try to take [advantage of] these opportunities.

“The league is complicated a little but we’ll see in four games as it’ll be more clear.

“We knew about them losing but it wasn’t as important to us as the Hamilton game.

“Every game is very hard here, because opponents get so much more motivated when they play Rangers or Celtic.

“We need to take more of our chances. We should have killed this game much earlier. We made it harder for ourselves than it should have been.

“In the next game we need to finish teams off as soon as possible. We had 22 corners so that’s not so good when you don’t score a second.”
