Carer left dependent teenager on toilet

A CARE worker who left a dependent teenager stuck on a toilet in the dark for almost two hours has been given a warning.

Connor McDermott failed to check on the 19-year-old who “dependent on support” – at Quarriers’ Countryview respite facility in Bridge of Weir for an hour and 40 minutes on March 4, 2017.

After the teen was discovered, McDermott again failed to complete an incident report or inform the duty manager of the event.

The care worker also did not place the cot sides and protective bumper in position around the young girl’s bed.

The Scottish Social Services Council said: “By your actions you were negligent and showed a disregard for a care requirement for [the teenager].”

McDermott, who was said to be “remorseful” of his actions, was placed on a 12-month warning.

The Countryview site provides residential respite for six young people and one long-term resident as well as an emergency bed in a purpose-built bungalow.

It is understood he has since moved on to a new employer and no further incidents have been reported.

A Quarriers spokeswoman said: “We are very sorry that support to this person fell short of our usual high standards. As with any incidents of this nature, it is Quarriers’ protocol to inform the SSSC and we did that as soon as we were made aware.”

“This has since been dealt with by SSSC and by Quarriers’ own internal processes.”
