Defender McDonald pulls out all the stops to reignite Junior career

- BY JIM O’DONNELL

BEITH veteran Kevin McDonald has put on hold plans to hang up his football boots.

And the one-time Motherwell midfielder says he is willing to move club.

McDonald was a defensive stalwart when, in 2016, the Mighty won the Scottish Junior Cup for the first time in the club’s history.

However, the 35-year-old has made just 10 appearances to date when his retiral was announced.

He said: “I didn’t feature much earlier this season on account of me getting married at the beginning of October. However, I’ve come back and been available for selection for six or seven weeks now but without any sign of me getting a starting jersey.

“I still have confidence in my abilities and feel I can keep playing to a decent standard but I’m resigned to moving away from Beith to make it happen, even if I need to drop down to a level below the Premiership.”

Also on the move is experienced centre-back Thomas Miller of Renfrew whose transfer listing earlier this month has culminated in him signing for leading Championship promotion contenders Rutherglen Glencairn.

Elsewhere, word of Beith stopper McDonald’s desire to keep playing might lead to an approach from rivals Cambuslang Rangers, needing to rethink their centreback strategy after mainstay Scott Faulds was hit by a 17-game ban (for two red cards).

His appeal against being sent off against Irvine Meadow was considered frivolous causing his two match suspension to be doubled and a highly controversial incident at the end of a recent clash with Clydebank brought a further 13 games after Faulds was adjudged to have been involved in an altercation with a supporter.

Lang boss Paul McColl said: “Scott is totally shocked to be facing the prospect of his season coming to an end before the turn of the year and he has lodged an appeal with the full backing of Cambuslang Rangers.

“We as a club sent in a letter reporting a Clydebank official for instigating the fracas that broke out and why the referee has chosen to pick out Scott is bemusing as his only involvement was to have a verbal exchange with one of our own supporters, disappointed we had lost the game.”
