Hello 2019, what sweet styles have you got for us this year?

- with IONA TURNER

WELCOME to 2019 and to a whole new year of headturning trends and sensational styles. As we wave goodbye to the year that brought power suits out of the office and onto the catwalk and chunky sneaks off dad’s feet and into our wardrobes, I can’t wait to see what the fashion world has in store for us this year.

While I predict that a few of last year’s trends will follow us into 2019, as always, there will be some new kids on the block bursting onto the scene and making a statement.

I predict gorgeous green growing in 2019, both in a colourful and sustainable sense. Winter 2018 was sprinkled with emeralds and forest tones and this colour is definitely one which could transition into our spring/summer wardrobes this year in more subtle shades such as olive and sage. And as fast-fashion grows into a successful and somewhat scary empire, people are beginning to go green and take a step back to become more aware of eco-friendly fabrics and brands. Meghan Markle’s moments in the sun definitely contributed to interest in these brands as she was spotted in sustainable styles a number of times last year.

As for patterns, I predict the leopard trend continuing into next year in even bigger and bolder ways. Think hats, shoes, belts and bags in this fierce print helping to make holiday outfits pop. Checks are also making their way back onto the scene with cute Clueless-vibe skirts and tailored trousers keeping us all looking smart and sleek.

Materials for this year will include more PVC – yes we all love to look shiny and plastic from time to time - as well as tortoiseshell resin, especially in accessories such as bags and earrings. And whilst on the subject of accessories, get ready for bamboo bags this year. With straw bags upping their game in 2018, bamboo is the next big thing.

Now, this could divide the crowds but whether you loved them or hated them, the ‘ugly’ trainers are here to stay, and the funky but chunky style is also set to take the sandal world by storm. Statement sandals and oversized soles are sure to be a summer trend that we will all get behind – willingly or not.

My last prediction is that 2019 will be a great year, where we all look and feel fabulous - no matter what styles are sent our way.

Happy New Year, and stay stylish, Glasgow.
