If you’ve got a view on this story, we’d love to hear from you. sport@ eveningtimes. co.uk or on Facebook or Deeney in the aftermath of Saturday’s clash.

He said: “Our guys played well today and I cannot be over-disappointed at losing out to the team likely to be crowned champions.

“Rutherglen Glencairn are a very good football playing side and, for my money, are the best there is at this level, though I’m sure the other promotion challengers will have something to say about that.

“Benburb are decent and so, too, are Cumbernauld United and Kilsyth Rangers, while Arthurlie, who defeated us 3-2 last weekend, have put themselves in a very good position after a sticky start. And we still have to face Rossvale and get a close-up look at what they have to offer.”

“But, barring an unforeseen collapse, I cannot see past the Glens, whose consistency is nothing short of marvellous.”

Asking whether Whitletts, in seventh place in the table, could force themselves into the reckoning, evoked a defiant response from Deeney.

He said: “Losing today in a game we looked capable of winning at times has opened up a huge gap between ourselves and the leading sides and it’s maybe asking too much of us to close it in the games we have left to play.

“But never say never in this game and third top spot will remain our target until it’s mathematically impossible to achieve it.”

All the contenders have fixtures to fulfil on Saturday with Glencairn looking good bet for the spoils against Irvine Vics at the Celsius Stadium, as are Kilsyth Rangers who host bottom markers Larkhall Thistle. A tougher test at home undoubtedly awaits second in the table Benburb when unpredictable St Rochs visit New Tinto Park.

The long trek to Dalmellington should not prevent Cumbernauld picking up three points when facing Craigmark, while far more difficult to predict is the East Renfrewshire derby head to head between Neilston and a thirdtop Arthurlie intent on extending their unbeaten run to five games.
