Gerrard won’t get ahead of himself after Old Firm win as he eyes January deals to boost Gers’ title ambitions

-

STEVEN GERRARD will have loved every minute of the game on Saturday but he will have quickly moved on and got back down to business once the dust has settled.

He will know that at least two or three players are needed to really make Rangers title contenders and hopefully he can get them this month.

When Gerrard was appointed as manager in the summer, the fans would have been expecting to see a team that was all-action, aggressive, attacking and one that took it to the opposition in every game.

That is exactly what they got against Celtic. They didn’t just get ahead and then drop back, they kept going, they were relentless and they were ruthless in their play.

But this squad still has to improve and there will be deals done to sign a midfielder and a striker in particular.

Scott Arfield was brilliant in the middle of the park and that was an area where Rangers have rightly been criticised in these fixtures over the last couple of years. But Arfield, Ryan Jack and Ross McCrorie just clicked. They won the battle and earned the right to play.

Adding someone like Steven Davis would give the manager another quality option in there.

Getting players in is the most important business that Rangers will do in January but there are still guys on the books that have no future at the club. Can they move on the likes of Carlos Pena and Eduardo Herrera or are they going to be stuck with them for another window?

It will be interesting to see what happens with them, and a few others that are out of favour, because if you can move players on then you can free up a good deal of wages and Steven can have more finance for his second transfer window. Hopefully the next one is just as successful.

The next few weeks could be massive, not just for Rangers but for Celtic as well. It will be interesting to see if they flex their financial muscle, so to speak, and bring in three or four players that can really make the difference for them.
