Anson strikes lucky with dream move to Pollok
CUMNOCK hit-man Scott Anson has sealed a dream move to Pollok and is in line to make a quick debut when Glenafton visit Newlandsfield tomorrow afternoon.
Evening Times Sport understands the 29-yearold, who was in his second playing stint at Townhead Park and the Ayrshire outfit’s top scorer this season, recently tabled a transfer request, citing family reasons, which was initially rejected by newly-appointed team manager Paul Burns.
But being dropped to the substitutes’ bench when Cumnock suffered a 4-3 defeat against arch-rivals Auchinleck Talbot and then not featuring in last week’s 1-1 draw with Renfrew (he was attending a wedding) fuelled rumours that he had kicked his last ball for the team he joined from Shettleston in 2016.
Anson was then told he could talk with interested parties after Burns revealed a willingness to let him go by accepting a couple of transfer bids from two other Junior clubs, one thought to be from relegation-battling Kilbirnie Ladeside who recently acquired defender Kieron Wood from their top-flight rivals.
Anson said: “My sole reason for asking away in the first place is to allow me more time with my two young children whom I don’t see on Cumnock training nights because I don’t get home until after 11pm when they are tucked up in bed.
“And a further added complication is I don’t drive so signing for another Ayrshire-based club like Kilbirnie was simply not an option. My preference was always to find myself an interested club from in and around Glasgow.
“I was made aware of Benburb coming in with an offer that was knocked back because it didn’t meet Cumnock’s valuation and I was left in a sort of footballing limbo where I was understandably never going to be part of Burnsy’s rebuilding plans even though I had promised to stay professional by continuing to train and make myself available for selection as long as I was a Cumnock player.
“Thankfully Pollok made an approach and when one of the biggest clubs in the game come knocking on your door, then you have to answer it, and more so when they appear to be in with a shout for the major honours under Murdie McKinnon who is someone I’ve known for a long time.
“The only nagging concern was the fact I’m of limited use to them given my cup-tied status in both the Scottish and West Cups and can therefore only play league games.
“But any fears I had of this proving a barrier to a transfer taking place were blown away after chatting with Murdie over where he sees me in the grand scheme of things.
“He explained how I was a signing for next season and beyond but at the same time he has thrown down the gauntlet by challenging me to force my way into his selection thoughts during this current campaign. It’s a bit of an ask when you consider the quality of front players already at Pollok but I’m certainly up for it .”
